What I liked:

The only positive thing was its location.

What the hotel could do better:

The rooms were smelly and the carpets were dirty and are in need of a good clean. The breakfast buffet was dreadful. Fruit salad in plastic! No fresh fruit. No healthy options. The hotel feels dated and in desperate need for an update. Very few of the staff spoke English well. The front door people were useless in trying to find me a taxi. I would not stay there again.

Hotel Description

There’s something of a formula to South Beach hospitality on Collins Avenue, and it shows few signs of exhausting itself: a nod to Art Deco origins, one or more celeb-magnet cocktail lounges, a rooftop altar to hedonism, and a constant, unmissable undertone of swankTM. Here on the spinal thoroughfare of South Beach, mainstay of the Art Deco Historical District, the Stiles Hotel thankfully sidesteps those typical trappings. You’ll be glad they did, if for no other reason than the absolute glut of the aforementioned on every corner, but more so for the change of pace it does offer. There’s new ground, it seems, in dialing back the excess for cleaner, more minimalist digs.

The Stiles derives its moniker from John Stiles Collins himself, the famed land developer and the first to dub this stretch “Miami Beach.” It’s a legitimizing move more in keeping with London or New York’s hotel scene; few area landmarks can claim the Stiles’s eight decades, after all. And yet they haven’t distanced the property entirely from the reigning aesthetic, situating the 54 rooms squarely within boutique design territory. White-on-tan tones lend a restful ease to the accommodations, balanced by organic woven-fiber carpeting and a superabundance of sunshine, and a retro-chic whiff remains in the curvaceous furniture. Add in contemporary draws — free wi-fi, flatscreens, docking stations, walk-in showers with premium amenities — and you’ve got a stew going.

The renovation loosened and de-stifled the public spaces with adventurous pops of color and plenty of nooks and islands for socializing. Crucially, it doesn’t try to outdo the locale’s inherent grandeur: Francophile eatery Primrose serves farm- and net-to-table specialties without pretension, and nearby in the garden courtyard, a spacious deck hosts three dipping pools without overdosing on cabana-play. Be warned that you may need indoor shades for the Gold Bar’s glitzy explosion, though now that we think of it, it’s probably the best spot to shock yourself awake with an eye-opening mug of coffee (this is Miami, after all). And for your own sake, don’t hole yourself up here entirely; think of this as a recuperation pod between high-octane beach excursions.
