If Brighton is going to go upscale, and yet retain the thrill of its recent past as a seedy seaside getaway, then a familial, familiar little hotel like Blanch House is just the way to do it. Equal parts chic boutique and dressed-down guest house (with just a dash of dirty weekender) Blanch House has its roots not in the country estates after which most English hotels pattern themselves, but in the unpretentious bed & breakfasts that Brighton in particular has always been known for — and in the London members’ clubs from which it draws some of its more prominent guests.
Understand all that and you’ll be a long way toward understanding the shambling excellence of the place. A hotel that’s born as genuinely hip as this one will never come off like it’s trying hard — Blanch House is impeccably designed, converted from a listed Georgian terrace house, and yet its twelve guest rooms, all different, are both understated and full of character, never leaning too far into either minimalism or kitchen-sink funkiness. Look closely, though, and you’ll find all the luxuries accounted for, and carefully selected — Fogarty down duvets, Relyon beds, Trevi power showers and Molton Brown bath products.
As important as the rooms is the bar, which in this case is one of the best in Brighton, if not in England — co-owner Chris Edwardes managed some of London’s top watering holes, and even now Blanch House offers consulting and training services to cocktail upstarts. The restaurant is not quite as storied, but it’s quite good, and the result is that (unless it’s Sunday night, when the restaurant is closed) you’ll scarcely be missing out if you never venture outside.
